So I’ve been checking out legendries… and I think I have a solution; the Pokémon world is Polytheistic (worships many gods) Here’s why I think so. You were saying about how there are many different legendries and many people are worshiping them. This would rule out any possibility that the Pokémon world is Monotheistic. (Worships one god)
Now in a Polytheistic religion… there is usually one god that then subsections itself into other gods that take on roles to help the people/animals of earth. The main god in this case would have to be Arceus. Now, we all know Arceus Is the main god of the Pokemon world… due to all the legend books/stories in the game and then Pokedex entries. All the Pokedex entries for Arceus include something about how it created the universe/world.
Pokemon Platinum: “It is said to have emerged from an egg in a place where there was nothing, then shaped the world.”
So clearly… Arceus is the “main god” in the Pokemon world. So that would mean all the other legendaries are the other gods that the “main god” (Arceus) created to help with all the earthly needs. So I think Arceus created different legendary Pokémon and put them in all different regions to help out humans/animals.
Arceus created Dialga and Palkia before the world even existed. These three are known as “the creation trio because nothing else existed before them. This is very similar to Hinduism. There is the main God, Brahman… but then there are 3 other gods that directly descend from him (Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu) So this kinda proves that the Pokémon world is Polytheistic… since it follows a very very very similar pattern.
From that point on… all other Pokémon descended from these three.
Mew was created as “the ancestor.” Mew doesn’t protect anything like other legendries, but it was created by Arceus to create life. This makes sense, since it’s proven all Pokémon descend from Mew’s DNA.
Decedents of time would have to be Celebi (due to time travel) and Latios/Latias (the eon gaurdians)
Decedents of Space are a bit more extensive… and even branches out more. The main god of space would be Palkia, and from Palkia, three more gods were created: a god of sea, land, and sky.
The main sea god is Kyogre. Arceus created Kyogre and put him on earth to protect the seas. He was also created to create the seas. Kyogre then has 2 other gods to help. Kyogre is the guardian of the sea in general, but then Manaphy and Pione are the gaurdians of the cold and warm seas. Lugia was created to protect the sky above the seas… since it can swim AND fly.
The sky god is Rayquaza. Like in Hinduism, Brahman created certain gods to protect certain areas of the earth. The main sky god is Rayquaza. He lives all the way in the Ozone layer, so naturally he rules the sky… Arceus also created Landurus as a Pokemon to control the weather. From there, Thundurus was created to control lightning storms, and Tornadus was created to control wind. This is a lot like Rayquaza, Kyogre, and Groudon. They are known as the, “kami trio.” (another reference to Shinto, the gods are known as “kami” and kami-sama means “god” in Japanese.)
The main land god is Groudon. Groudon was created much like Kyogre. It was made to protect the land, but to also create it. Heatran was a subsection of Groudon, it souly protects and creates volcanos. It is the volcano god. This also makes me wanna believe Pokémon is like Hinduism because in Hinduism… many gods are created to protect geographic land marks. This also makes a connection with Shinto (the religion of Japan) since it is said many gods live in geographic places like mountains, volcanoes, seas, etc.) Anyways… Ho-oh was then created like Lugia, it protects the sky OVER the land since Groudon can’t. Ho-oh then created Raiko, Entei, and Suicune to protect the land. Suicune protects the rivers and bodies of water, Entei protects volcanos like Heatran, and Raiko protects the mountain tops.
Now those are just the guardians of earth’s many landmarks. Now in Hinduism (and other Polytheistic religions) there are yes, gods to protect the earth itself, but there are also gods of emotion and to protect how humans feel. This is a lot like the Greek/Roman gods. The gods in those religions, yes, protect the earth, but they also control human emotions. (ex: Anthea = guardian of human love) Arceus created gaurdians and teachers.
Arceus created many Pokémon to help humans not just on a geographical scale, but on an emotional scale. He created certain Pokémon to be teachers. Mespirit is the teacher of human emotion, Azelf is the teacher of human willpower, and Uxie is the teacher of human knowledge. In their Pokedex entries it is said they came from the same egg. All three of those things (knowledge, willpower, and emotion) are all things essential for humans to have, so Arceus created them together to help out humans. Shaymin was also created to help humans feel graditude. That’s why it only appears around when people are happy. Meloetta was created to teach humans song/dance. Vincini, was created to teach people victory, especially trainers. Cresselia was created so humans could have dreams, and Darkrai was created so humans could experience nightmares.
Now the dragons of Unova aren’t gaurdians… they too are teachers. They descended from an original dragon. (Unknown) Reshiram is the teacher of truth, Zekrom is the teacher of Ideals, and Kyruem is just an empty shell.
Now humans also created Legendary Pokémon. Mewtwo is a clone, and Genecect is a weapon. Regigigas was created as a guardian of land. It was said it placed the continents into place with ropes. So maybe humans created it to help put the world into place. All the Regis are parts of Regigigas, created during different periods of human development to help situate the earth. Regirock was created during the Stone Age, Regice during the Ice Age, and Registeel during the Iron Age.
Arceus also created, “the swords of justice.” The main god in that section is Cobalion. Then, lesser gods Virizion, Terrakion, and Keldeo. They don’t protect anything physical, but they rather are protectors of justice.
Now to some it up, Arceus is the main god along. He created the universe, and then created Dialga and Palkia to help create everything else. These three make up, “the creation trio.” Then, from there, other major gods were created along with lesser gods to help aid with their protection of that area of the world.
Now, Mew was the “mother” of all the “normal” Pokémon. Now, some Pokémon seem to be half god-like. (kind of like in Greek mythology were some of the gods are half god and half mortal, so they live on earth yet have god-like powers.) now, I think the Pokémon world is similar. For example, Castform can transform and control the weather, kinda like Thundurus, Tornadus, and Landurus, right? Another one, Togekiss brings happiness where ever it goes… kinda seems like something one of the legendary teaching gods would do,
Idunno this is a very hard topic. Because you never know… they say Arceus is “god,” but yet they celebrate Christmas in the anime. To sum it up, Pokémon religion is a mix of Greek mythology, Shinto, and Hinduism.
